A Filipino couple’s once-in-a-lifetime experience with a local photographer in Japan’s mountain town.

Planning the Kimono Photoshoot

How It All Started

When Ann and her partner first reached out to me, they were planning their Japan trip from the Philippines — excited, curious, and not quite sure how to make a kimono photoshoot happen.

They didn’t know where to rent kimonos, or how to find a stylist in Takayama. So I helped arrange everything — from contacting a local kimono artist, Ikumi-san, to planning the timing and styling.

Making It Special

It wasn’t meant to be just a casual walk in a kimono, but something more meaningful: a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

We decided together that instead of casual street-style kimonos often worn for sightseeing, they would wear a more formal visiting kimono Homongi and Haori hakama, to fully honor the elegance and depth of Japanese tradition. I wanted them to feel fully immersed — to wear something refined and elegant, reflecting the respect and beauty of Japanese culture.

The Photoshoot Day in Takayama

Walking Through Takayama’s Old Town

We met at Snoopy Chaya Café, right in the heart of Takayama’s old town — a charming, light-hearted spot that felt just right for their personalities. Before starting, we stopped by Takayama Pudding-tei, where they shared laughter over small desserts, easing into the day with that playful energy only couples deeply in sync have.

From there, we wandered through the narrow streets lined with wooden merchant houses. The two of them stood out beautifully against the dark wood tones and soft autumn colors. Locals smiled as we passed, often saying “kirei ne!” (“so beautiful”) with genuine delight.

As we made our way toward the Takayama Jinya area, the late-afternoon light wrapped the town in gold. The air felt calm, and everything slowed — just the sound of geta clogs on stone and quiet laughter between them. It’s in moments like this that I feel most grateful for my work: being trusted to witness love, in its most natural form.

From Tradition to the Everyday

After exploring the town, we returned to their hotel so they could change into their casual clothes.
Even without the kimono, they looked effortlessly stylish — the kind of people whose chemistry makes everything around them come alive.

We headed back into town, stopped for senbei (Japanese rice crackers), and wandered aimlessly again through the market streets.
They shared ramen for lunch, and I photographed them as they were — relaxed, laughing, simply being together.

Sometimes, the most beautiful photos come not from grand gestures but from the quiet rhythm between two people who truly enjoy each other’s company.

Why Takayama Is Perfect for a Couple Photoshoot

If you’re wondering where in Japan to have your photos taken — Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka — consider Takayama.

This small mountain town in Gifu Prefecture offers a completely different atmosphere. Traditional streets, gentle hospitality, and a slower pace create a peaceful escape from busy cities.

  • From Tokyo: about 4.5 hours by train via Nagoya (JR Tokaido + Hida Limited Express)
  • From Kyoto/Osaka: about 3.5–4 hours by train
  • Best seasons:
    • 🌸 Spring — cherry blossoms along the Miyagawa River
    • ☀️ Summer — lush greenery and lively morning markets
    • 🍁 Autumn — warm colors and crisp air
    • ❄️ Winter — snow-covered roofs and quiet magic

No matter the season, Takayama’s charm lies in how it slows you down. It gives you space to breathe, connect, and see each other clearly.
